Great poll, Haroldo. I've chimed in before, but to repeat, no vista compatible PC here. Of the four PCs in the home office, only one has the BIG video requirements, and that's on my son's gaming PC. I don't need 256MB VRAM like my son does. I suppose the 64MB card in my server would scrape by to run the Aero features, but the 8MB VRAM in one of the workstations and my notebook won't cut it. I am more than happy with the functionality of Windows 2000 and XP. Until I am forced to update, which means supporting customers that are using Vista, I won't update. MS fatware.

The second question, "Assuming you have a VRPC, will you upgrade to Vista? (**within the next year**)", should have
"My computer is a VRPC, but I have no plans to buy Vista" included as an option.
Also, the last question (about Vista usage experience) has the option:
"amazed, it is outrageous!"
"Outrageous" is usually meant as a NEGATIVE term. Is that the intent here, that one was shocked by their bad Vista experience?

Upgrade, for most, will be a purchase decision. The choice was meant to cover this option.

Where I came from, outrageous was to describe an extreme emotion, either positive or negative.

Microsoft is the best proponent Ubuntu, SuSE, Knoppix and the rest could have asked for, if they'd asked.
I have heard Server 2003 run as a workstation (or even with all networking components removed, imagine that!) is superior to XP. But Vista is a stillborn abomination to personal computing.

So, I suppose Celtic Ferret's assessment is in line with the opinion that Vista is cruel, immoral, indecent, insulting, and injurious!

On second thought, maybe I shouldn't have!

There are so many combinations of choices that the survey could quickly become unwieldy.
All I want to know is 'are people interested in upgrading' and if not, 'why?'

BillyBoy didn't get his wad of dough by running a charity.
MS should continue addressing the issues in XP and improve that before they start forcing everyone to get Vista.
They are greedy beyond belief, and I will do everything to protect the OS I run, so that it can be run for as long as humanly possible without lining the pockets of those sharks.

Let's wait before accusing them of anything.
WXP is still supported.

Indeed. Not only here but at the HotFix, AutoPatcher_XP, archives of google caches of BlackViper's old site, ZERT, etc., etc.
Of course I'm one of those who's unhappy when the ride ends (and I still use DiamondCS Trojan Defense Suite Pro 3 now and again. Remember how unhappy we all were when that died.)
If you're a pc enthusiast and you can afford a $$$ video card and 2 GB+ RAM, etc., etc. then upgrading to the next bleeding edge stuff is expected. But if you're some elderly person who just wants to email the grandkids but can't safely because your OS shouldn't be allowed "anywhere near the internet" because support that was quite questionable in the first place ended...
I liked WFW whatever it was (v3.11?), and NT. Never used '95, '98, or 2k enough to really get a good opinion, although '98 with the '95 core was a thing I toyed with (98Lite). ME was (and still is for the people who upgraded to WinXP instead of doing a fresh install) arguably the worst OS Microsoft ever produced. Then came XP, and despite the security nightmares it was (is) the best OS from Microsoft I've ever used (as I said I have no time on Server 2003, modified or no).
When I had to spend thousands of $ upgrading from WFW to '95 I did so "kicking and screaming," as is pretty normal for me I guess. Vista is a lose - lose proposition for me in so many ways.
Thanks Microsoft. You are forcing me to Linux. Which is a good thing, I just hate being forced to do anything.

95....98...ME....2k....all around 3 years between them.
As for support, according to microsoft, its meant to be a year after Vista release.
http://www.microsoft...le/default.mspx
Please note this is not a "final" set in stone date. Just like they moved the Win 98 and 2k support times, they will no doubt move the XP support deadline as well.
So why people are bemoaning the fact that XP will no longer be supported is strange to say the least...especially given some of the comments here: "XP was arguably the best OS Microsoft"
Who is to say Vista won't be better?

Let's not spend too much energy worrying about what might happen in a year?
In a year of two we'll deal with the XP issue, but for now...enjoy today...life is short.

Altho I can hardly wait to get a hot new machine, I'll continue to use XP & my next OS will likely be a Linux (Ubuntu's looking pretty good!). Probably gonna set up dual booting soon to get used to a different OS, & hopefully 3rd party Windows based programs will be running well on Linux before support is dropped for XP.
MS's release of Windows Defender has led me to Spyware Terminator (& it's uncontrollable update behavior has led me from Zone Alarm to the Comodo firewall); IE 7 has led me to Firefox 2; & Vista is leading me to Ubuntu. Guess, in spite of it all, I should really be thankful to Microsoft for slowly pushing me towards 'better' things.

Although I'm certain this will be circumvented, why buy something that prohibits you from "backing up" any media? Didn't Prohibition teach any lessons about making a common practice illegal? Maybe Redmond didn't go thru that with the rest of the country.
Although I have several issues with Vista, this alone would be a killer. Non-negotiable. I wouldn't want their DRM-infested **** on any computer I was using. The C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\DRM\ in WinXP is way more than enough for me.
I've been dual-booting into SuSE for quite a while now and I don't recommend it: You still spend nearly all your time in Windows because
1) It's what you know.
2) You're always having to research and fix problems; i.e. test the fix.
3) "Everyone" else uses it so it's what's on all the computers you look at.
I loved that line from the Boss in "Thank You For Smoking." "The Boss" was grilling his workers in a meeting about receding tobacco sales. It went something like this...
Boss: Cigarettes are cool, available, and addictive. Our job is practically done for us...
So I think Microsoft Windows is addictive...

1) They graciously allowed me to join the Beta test program very late in hte program (I joined the day they released RC2, and I have to double check, but I think my downloaded ISO image is actually a newer build than the DVD they sent to me)
2) They have taken some major strains to sandbox processes a lot more, thereby minimizing the chances for automated Malware as they stand now
3) It is personal choice - I usually dual boot in some manner or fashion, and as I am 'slowly' building my Gentoo install, I have XUbuntu 6.1 on the laptop, and Vista and XP on this machine. Eventually, I will probably build a new machine, make it Linux only, and run virtual machines of Windows OS to keep current with end users - kind of hard to support a user when they are on an interface you've never used.
