Event Title: Products with Ask Toolbar
Event Owner: Donna
Event Calendar: Calendar of Updates
Event Date: December 31st 1969
Topic Starter: Pluto
Event Post:

Due to the inclusion/bundling and/or default (pre-checked) opt-in of the Ask Toolbar and Ask Search Assistant, it has been determined that this site will no longer provide update information for the products of the following vendors:

1. Check Point or ZoneLabs - Delisted. It's no longer offering Ask Toolbar but Conduit Toolbar with Google Search Assistant. Discussion here.
2. Webroot - Delisted. Please see the post here. Listed again. See post here.
3. Comodo - Delisted today (June 12, 2010). See discussion in http://www.calendaro...howtopic=31254. The EULA was revised by removing information about HopSurf (Version 4.1.150349.920, June 9, 2010). The setup file do not include HopSurf/Ask Toolbar anymore. The Comodo website continue to offer HopSurf Toolbar as standalone installer. Note that HofSurf Toolbar is NOT required. Do not download it if you don't need it.
4. StopZilla
5. Symantec
6. BitDefender
7. ClamWin
8. IMMUNET - see report here
. Delisted: Update: June 22, 2010 - Immunet announced the removal of Ask Toolbar in its installer. See information here and here. Another update: Listed AGAIN. See report in http://www.calendaro...ndpost&p=108415

We highly recommend to users of the products by the said vendor to ALWAYS check for updates. Their programs are not in any way bad but we do not want users to be at risk by installing a toolbar that has questionable reputation. Un-checking the installation of the toolbar is easy but NOT ALL USERS are advanced users. There are thousands of BEGINNERS that can fall into installing a questionable toolbar and most of this thousand of beginners DO NOT know that it is NOT necessary to install such toolbar to operate the program.

CoU will no longer provide update information for the above-mentioned vendor's products until the questionable toolbar is found clear by respected researchers, malware scanners and/or removed from their installer.

Again, we would like to advise users to manually check for updates or configure any anti-malware scanner to check for definitions update prior running a scan. If the program is running its real-time protection against malware, it is HIGHLY recommended to enable automatic updates.

Let us hope this list will not grow!

@Software Authors/Developers/Vendors: Users want a security tool. Not a toolbar. Users know where to download a toolbar (if they need one) that do NOT have questionable status.

The was originally posted in CoU forums and calendar last year but now gone due to database issue (sorry for the inconvenience).
Google Cache is here.

Update (June 8, 2009 9:30AM Board Time): The comments on the above is quite long (many readers might not see the new info) but below is the recap on why Ask/IAC on any security program is unacceptable to many of us:

Unnecessary addition and unacceptable method to push the add-on by "security" software vendors that should provide clean installer instead of including Adware/Spyware/PUPs. These vendors should focus in improving their products, fix the bugs and continue to look for methods in protecting people instead of pushing unwanted toolbar or search assistant:
1. Symantec did not only add Ask.com Search Assistant in its installer for new installations or re-install (if the user downloaded the new installer with Ask.com Search Assistant) but also pushed the Ask.com Search Assistant together as or with a "patch" or "program update" to existing Norton users. No option to remove the Ask.com Search Assistant. They originally enabled Ask.com Search Assistant by default and later decided to disable it by default but again, no option to remove the unnecessary Ask.com Search Assistant.
2. ZoneLabs offering free ZoneAlarm: Misleading their ZoneAlarm Free users by offering Spy Blocker which is actually Ask.com Toolbar which is not necessary to have the protection by ZoneAlarm.
3. Comodo is offering also Ask.com Toolbar in its installer of Comodo Internet Security. It was offered too in Comodo Firewall Pro. They plan to remove the Ask.com Toolbar in Comodo installer but they continue with their partnership with Ask/IAC by offering HopSurf/Ask Toolbar. Update (July 3, 2009) - Comodo released the new version of CIS without SafeSurf anymore but with HopSurf/Ask/IAC Toolbar and yes, it is pre-checked again so beginners can fall into installing unneeded and unnecessary third party with questionable status toolbar/service. Screenshots here. Update: July 18: Please note that CIS do not have EULA for HopSurf and no EULA for people to read/agree or not about Ask.com search integration in CIS. There should clear disclosure of this but Comodo do not has it. They offer 2 EULA online but it is not linked in CIS installer or HopSurf installation wizard. They claim another EULA is available which is in PDF format but there is no mention about Ask.com which obviously misleading because Ask is integrated in HopSurf Toolbar. They claim that there is a mistake in 2 online EULAs so they modified it now by removing references of IAC/Ask. Still they failed to realize that it is important for them to provide clear disclosure on what their HopSurf Toolbar has to offer: It has Ask.com search, this should be mentioned in EULA.
4. Webroot is offering Ask Toolbar on the installer of Webroot product (trial version).
5. StopZilla is also offering Ask Toolbar on the installer of StopZilla
6. BitDefender suddenly offers a free anti-phishing toolbar with Ask.com Search Assistant. Can't they offer the free anti-phishing toolbar without Ask?
7. After some weeks of running a poll by ClamWin whether to include or not Ask Toolbar.. they decided to release the final and for public use of ClamWin with Ask Toolbar. Discussion here and here.

If the above security software vendors are thinking that Ask.com Search Assistant and/or Ask.com Toolbar is Harmless... think again by reading below. How in the world a security software vendor decided to associate or partner their name to company with below practices?

Privacy Issue
Ask.com Search Assistant or Ask.com Toolbar if in use by people will send/receive data from the following third party domains:
othersonline.com
ad.doubleclick.net
media.adrevolver.com
everesttech.net
All these is not in the EULA of Ask.com Search or Toolbar
Note: Search/Toolbar of Google, Yahoo and Windows Live do not have to do what Ask.com is doing when using their search engine.
This is documented by me here and here.
Note: Ask.com offers AskEraser to delete searches that is known tracked by third party. However, AskEraser does not apply or will not work in Ask.com Toolbar or Ask.com Search Assistant provided by third party software like Norton, Webroot, StopZilla, Comodo/HopSurf, ZoneAlarm, Glary Utilities, FoxIt Reader etc:

Quote

Where does AskEraser work and where does it not work?
AskEraser works if you come directly to Ask.com and perform a search within the Ask.com search box. It also works on searches conducted on Ask.com search boxes embedded within Firefox, Internet Explorer and other browsers. However, even if you have AskEraser enabled, the feature will not work on searches performed through an Ask.com search toolbar or an Ask.com search box available on a third-party site or through third-party software that you choose to install on your computer and AskEraser will not display as an option.

Security Issues in using Ask/IAC business, software or services
1. Documented by MVP Mike Burgess on August 26, 2008:

Quote

Ask routes their Sponsored Result thru Google then redirects to the (un)desired site ..."avxp-2008(dot)net" is yet another site maintained by the "Pandora Software Group"

2. One of the business or services by IAC is offering MyFunCards and MyWebSearch which is also known as Spyware and IAC has no control at all with their services putting people at risk?
Documented by MVP Mike Burgess on February 23, 2009:

Quote

MyWebSearch (MyFunCards) using the Microsoft format for an Information Bar prompt ... can't you people come up with anything better that copying someone else's idea? ... Anyway look at the type of content (adult video) that they are trying to attract new customers from ...Not only that ... the prompt is a complete lie! ..."The video will start after you download it ..." simply clicking the embedded link in the video will allow the video to play without installing anything from MyWebSearch ... if you do fall for this deceptive prompt you end up at their Toolbar install ...

3. Ask Toolbar Critical Vulnerability: Ask Toolbar ToolbarSettings ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow. If any vendor refuse to fix vulnerability... it makes you wonder why they will not fix? As far as we know, vulnerability on software is one of the methods by spyware, malware and exploiters to infect people's machine. You might argue that the security vendors created/developed their own toolbar but added only the Ask.com Search Assistant... well, if there's no other security and privacy risk and the method of pushing by security vendors the unnecessary function or feature on security software, you will think they are serious to secure a person's machine by partnering with a company with spyware/adware business?

Of course, let's not forget the popular documentation by Ben Edelman on Practices of IAC/Ask: http://www.benedelma...e/ask-toolbars/
And the new one from Ben Edelman on SmileyCentral which is another business of Ask/IAC : IAC's SmileyCentral Grab Advertisers' Organic Traffic to Show Google Ads

Below Security Software Vendors received our CoUdos for not adding Ask.com Toolbar on their installer (they publicly said "no" or decided to not to include the toolbar)

1. MVP Bill Pytlovany for WinPatrol (WinPatrol.com). He said "No to Ask Toolbar" and he rejected the offer twice! Here and here.
2. Mike Nash for Online Armor (Tallemu.com)

To other security community who voiced their concern, THANK YOU. You have shown the true spirit by providing responsible security and privacy practices and recommendation. Being involved in the security and privacy community is not an easy task but we salute you for helping many end-users to be informed on what to remove and avoid. Example: Landzdown

To all "updaters", "hijackthis analysts" and "people helping" in the security community or forums that are helping people on what to remove/avoid, a big CoUdos to you!

Note on FoxIt Reader's installer (not a security program but related to the above): There are reports by many users that FoxIt Reader will install Ask.com Toolbar even if they opted-out. Not good practice by FoxIt guys! Pushing spyware/adware is not good!

Edit (June 9, 2009) - Microsoft Fix It Solution: Problem caused by an Internet Explorer add-on

20. Trademark Notices
The Ask.com Marks that appear throughout the Ask.com web sites belong to Ask.com and are protected by U.S. and international trademark laws. Ask.com and the "ask" button are registered trademarks of Ask.com. The "Ask" logo, Ask.com for Kids, Branded Response, Premier Listings, MyStuff, and other Ask.com logos and product and service names are service marks or trademarks of Ask.com. (the "Ask.com Marks").

21. Copyrights and Copyright Agent
Pursuant to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. sec. 512 (the "DMCA"), we have designated an agent to receive "Notifications of Claimed Copyright Infringement" on the Sites, who can be reached as follows:
CopyrightAgent@ask.com, or
Ask.com
Attention: Annie Capeler, Copyright Agent
555 12th Street
Oakland, CA 94607

If you believe in good faith that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement and that the illegal copy appears on or is accessible through the Sites or Services, please provide our copyright agent the following:
(a) Your address, telephone number, and email address;
(B) A description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed;
© A description of where the material that you claim is infringing is located on the Site (or on the third-party site, in the case of infringing search result links, including the URL (Internet address) of such third-party site);
(d) A statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
(e) A statement by you, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the copyright owner’s behalf; and
(f) An electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright interest.

In lieu of preparing your own notification, you may print this Notification of Claimed Copyright Infringement form, complete and sign it, and mail it to our copyright agent at the above address.

Pursuant to the DMCA, once we receive a properly prepared Notification of Claimed Copyright Infringement, we will remove or de-link, as applicable, the allegedly infringing content or site until we receive a properly prepared Counter-Notification. Even after we de-link an allegedly infringing site, it is possible that the site will reappear once a further search is run, due to the technology that many search engines employ in conducting searches for our users. Therefore, a more effective way to remove allegedly infringing material is by filing a Notification of Claimed Copyright Infringement with the Internet service provider that hosts the allegedly infringing website.

Please note that if the allegedly illegal copy appears in content that is supplied to one of the Sites by a third-party content provider, we may respond by referring you to that provider.

If a properly prepared Notification of Claimed Copyright Infringement has been filed with us against you, we will advise you of that fact. If you would like to file a Counter-Notification of Claimed Copyright Infringement, we will provide you with a mail-in form that accompanies our letter to you advising you of the claimed infringement.

You may want to seek independent legal counsel before filing a notification or counter-notification.

22. General Terms

No Other Agreements Between Us. With the exception of our Privacy Policy, the Guidelines and the Disclaimers, this Agreement (as it may be revised by us as provided above) constitutes the entire agreement between you and us governing your use of the Software, the Sites and the Services and supersedes any prior agreements between you and us for that purpose, including any membership agreements or other similar agreements applying to the Software, the Sites or the Services.

Acts of Nature. Under no circumstances shall we or our licensors be held liable for any delay or failure in performance resulting directly or indirectly from acts of nature, forces, or causes beyond our or their reasonable control, including, without limitation, Internet failures, computer equipment failures, telecommunication equipment failures, and other equipment failures.

Applicable Law; Jurisdiction. This Agreement, including the Privacy Policy, and the relationship between you and us are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You and we agree to submit to the personal and exclusive jurisdiction of the state and federal courts located within the County of San Francisco, California.
Severability. If any provision of this Agreement is found by a court or other binding authority to be invalid, you agree that every attempt shall be made to give effect to the parties’ intentions as reflected in that provision, and the remaining provisions contained in this Agreement shall continue in full force and effect.

Limitation of Actions Brought Against Us; No Waiver. You agree that any claim or cause of action arising out of your use of the Software, the Sites, the Services, or this Agreement, including the Privacy Policy, must be filed within one year after such claim or cause of action arose or it shall forever be barred, notwithstanding any statute of limitations or other law to the contrary. Our failure to enforce or exercise any provision of this Agreement or related right shall not constitute a waiver of that right or provision.

Our friend BillP (WinPatrol) received another invitation to bundle ASK toolbar in his WinPatrol. This is the 2nd time he receive the offer and again, he said NO to ASK toolbar again. Thanks Bill!

I also see that Donna just posted an article specifically about the Ask.com toolbar; Update on Products with Ask Toolbar. It was a timely post considering just last week I heard back from IAC/InterActiveCorp asking if I would re-consider adding the Ask.com toolbar to WinPatrol. I was told that I wouldn’t have to include MyWebSearch or promote other infamous FunWebProducts from IAC. “We’re not really connected to them” I was told. As I did in the past, I said “No thanks”.

http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2008/08/w...h-toolbars.html

The first time he said no was earlier this year: http://billpstudios.blogspot.com/2008/01/w...-with-your.html

Just to add that WinPatrol Plus also alerted me to the Ask toolbar's attempt to install, after I installed the trial version of Spy Sweeper. It took 3 alerts from Scotty that I said "no" to, before Ask gave up, and did not install in IE7.

Good dog!

He's really a good watchdog. Really like WinPatrol because it does the job in monitoring and alerting in real-time.

BTW, another reason we should continue to not to post updates for programs with Ask Toolbar is because there's report that the option to disable Ask toolbar in ZA free installer is not available:

Quote

After I had disabled my Nod32-Antivirus so that I could download and start the installer I found out, that there is no such checkbox to disable this toolbar in my version!

Proof-screenshot:

http://www.sdv-fusion.de/wow/pics/temppics...r/ZoneAlarm.jpg

and here the proof-screenshot that the file originaly is from your servers:

http://www.sdv-fusion.de/wow/pics/temppics...m_Bedrohung.jpg

There you can see the blocked file and url that the mini-installer wants to access.

http://forums.zonealarm.com/zonelabs/board...essage.id=75549

That was posted Jan. 2008 but I can't view the screenshot anymore.

well received a responce from Burnaware support
and was given this answer

Quote

Hello Gordon,

Nero cames with same toolbar:
http://www.nero.com/eng/support-faq.html?s...32f5ac09f90c907

GOM Player offers Google toolbar.
Whole Download.com offers Yahoo toolbar partnership:
http://www.upload.co...21-5193860.html

It is frequent phenomenon when free software contains additional
services.

Those false postivies from antispyware software just their mistakes.
Actually our main EXE file sometimes detected as trojan by AVG (false
positive on ASProtect).

We don't force to install Ask. If you acciendtly install it you can
easily uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.

Best regards,
John Well

Tell them to team up with Google, Yahoo or MSN then... I guess the concept that there is a reason the ones I just mentioned are not flagged, but the ask toolbar is flagged, escapes them.

If you click on the cache link, the following error is reported ( on my system anyway ). Could somebody advise please

Your search - cache:Utfjw7_vkdoJ:www.dozleng.com/updates/calendar48011 products with ask toolbar - did not match any documents.

Suggestions:

* Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
* Try different keywords.
* Try more general keywords.
* Try fewer keywords.
