My "Defence" includes both SpywareBlaster and Spybot S&D.
I am not prepared to "modify" my defence so that this "stupid" IE8 can work properly. Like Pluto, I have uninstalled it and gone back to IE7.
I will stay with IE7 till Microsoft decides to get it to work properly... :woot:

Good old Firefox...... :dancing:

IE-SPYAD for example, is not compatible with IE7. At least the IE-SPYAD site says:

Quote

This ad/spy server "Restricted Zone" list can be used with the following versions of Internet Explorer:
Internet Explorer 7.0

Internet Explorer 6.0 (incl. SP1)
Internet Explorer 5.5 (incl. SP1 & SP2)
Internet Explorer 5.01 (incl. SP1 & SP2)
Internet Explorer 5.0
Internet Explorer 4.01 (incl. SP1 & SP2)
Internet Explorer 4.0

ZonedOut was last updated last year so we also need to wait until there's new edition, if any before we can use IE-SPYAD for ZonedOut.
Errrr..... Come again?? Looks like it works with IE7 to me. Maybe you meant IE8?

I'm more than a little concerned about the SpywareBlaster and Spybot issues mentioned in this thread. :brickwall:

That being said, let me add some references:

HOW TO solve IE8 installation problems
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949220

No-charge support for Internet Explorer 8 installation, set-up and usage (only) is available via the phone based on your locale through 31 December 2009. Customers must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista in a non-domain environment. US & CA Residents: 866-234-6020. Other: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.a...&prid=13043

How to uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8 (should the need arise)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Personal Tips:

• I would strongly recommend disabling your anti-virus application and any anti-spyware application's "system protections" (other than Defender's) before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade. If you're running a third-party firewall, I would recommend disabling it and then enabling the Windows Firewall before installing (or uninstalling) an IE upgrade.

• Create a Restore Point manually before installing IE8.

• Reboot twice after installing or uninstalling IE8.

• Make certain that your anti-virus application, any anti-spyware applications (other than Defender), and your third-party firewall (if any) is supported in IE8 Final before you decide install it.

At this time, Internet Explorer 8 is not fully supported by Intuit for use with the TurboTax Online program.

If anybody thinks that above is within the level of knowledge or competence of Mr or Mrs Average user, then I am an astronaut.... :rotf:

Microsoft MUST realise that not all of us are software experts. Spreading information all over the place does not help the average user, who wants to just press the install button and finish with it.

As I said earlier....Good old Firefox..... :dancing:

Assuming, of course, that the Mr. or Mrs. Average knows how to install Firefox.
Most newbies that I know don't know what the word "browser" means. (many call the browser an "internet")
I'll go out on a limb and assume that few know that they can install a third party browser.

Some update or additional info why IE8 is not loading fast, why it freezed or hangs "if" IE-SPYAD, Spybot S&D Immunization is in enable or in use:

I contacted Todd (author of ZonedOut) and asked him what can he say about the issue. His reply:

Quote

My hunch is that it is simply the quantity of sites that causes the freezing. The only information I have found thus far is that MS has made IE8 so that the tabs are individual processes - and in doing so IE8 will allow multiple tabs open that are in different zones. So I am guessing the process for loading the restricted sites is taking much longer that it did in previous versions.

After reading his email reply, I test it again by only allowing adults.txt of IE-SPYAD containing 931 adult domains only compared to 61,549 ads domain (ie-ads.txt) to be restricted in IE8.

The result is IE8 load fast and run normally if there is low quantity of restricted sites entry. IE8 will not load fast, will cause high cpu usage of explorer.exe, will freeze until the processes is loaded... if there is thousands of entries in the restricted sites added by IE-SPYAD or Spybot S&D.

This is also the same in Spybot S&D immunization. Since Spybot S&D will try to immunize IE against thousands of bad domains, IE8 will load slow or freeze/hang because IE8 is now using LCIE architecture.

For users who want to know more about Loosely-Coupled Internet Explorer (LCIE)... please see the following:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/03/1...ed-ie-lcie.aspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-...sting.aspx#lcie

Anyway, we'll see how Spybot Team and Eric Howes will adjust their protection tools to hopefully fix the issue due to that new feature in IE8. For now users depending on IE-SPYAD and immunization by Spybot S&D... should continue to use IE7. If you want IE8, you need to disable IE-SPYAD or Spybot S&D immunization to avoid the freezes, high CPU usage.

Also, always check back the link:
http://go.microsoft..../?LinkId=124056 or http://msdn.microsof...s/dd441788.aspx

For known issues and compatibility issues in using IE8. If you are using software/application that is not compatible with IE8... don't upgrade soon.

I have to agree with you any install should be simple to do, because people will not bother otherwise. You shouldn't have to do things before you can install, it should a simple thing of getting it downloading it and then working with it. I do think that some forget that not everyone is really that interested in the tech side all they want is something that works first-time and is safe to use nothing more or less than that. That is why until it is an automatic download va updates or is part of windows 7 the vast majority of pc users will not be having IE8. My son wouldn;t if I had not put it on for him when I was updating his system at work.

Another update, guys:

Eric at IE Team wrote:

@Donna: We have determined that there is a problem with the SpyBot Search and Destroy "innoculate" feature which puts 10000 domains in the restricted sites list.

*** It's possible that this might be causing the performance problems on startup that some folks are reporting here. ***

It was posted as comment reply in their blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2009/03/1...ilable-now.aspx

Let's hope to see peformance fix then :)

Anyone running IE8 with Spybot, SpywareBlaster, and/or IESpyAd ZonedOut may want to see if the unwanted behavior described earlier in this thread persists after disabling IE8's SmartScreen Filter.

I'd also like to ask if anyone's seeing any unusual behavior with McAfee Site Advisor plug-in or similar installed (and SmartScreen Filter enabled)?

Robear, when I run the test by immunizing IE8 and using IE-Spyad, I don't have SmartScreen, Suggested site enabled (it's disabled but the above issues occured)

You're welcome, Robear!

BTW, No problem in running SiteAdvisor here in IE8. Just finish installing it in this test bed and do a search while SmartScreen Filter is enabled:

Attached Image: 3_21_2009_7_16_55_AM.png

But when I installed WOT:

I'll see if removing SA will not give that crash problem. Not sure yet if it's WOT or conflict on WOT and SA.

Would like to see how Sitehound will work but I realized, our friend Johngalt here reported an issue already (let me find his post)

Edit: Noticed there's update for WOT for IE8 compatibility.

You can easily delete, disable, or enable Accelerators by clicking on Manage Add-ons from the Tools button on the upper right-hand corner of your browser window.

Gordon,

You cannot remove it but you can disable it:
If IE8 is installed already: IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>In settings, look for Browsing. Uncheck "Display Accelerator on selection"

Give it a try.
