Roll on Windows 7 because anything has to be an improvement on this dog of a system. I've never experienced as many failed updates on a computer as I have with my Toshiba Equium laptop. It had loads of unwanted **** removed as soon as I got it and has hardly had a great deal installed since then other than security programs. I've tried validation again which was successful, this version of the update from M$ and now I'm bl**dy fed up. Googling the error only brings up only one relevant entry and the suggestion to hide the update (thread not completed methinks) isn't a good idea as this is an important security update. :hmm:

Yeah sorry Rod, shoulda posted it. Code 80004005 which it seems is just a standard error which applies to WU, WMPlayer, etc. and the only thing that came close was this and that applies to XP not Vista' cause I ain't got the files mentioned in the thread.

I checked the Microsoft KB article for that update and they don't have any known issues posted.

I also used BING to search simply because it is a Microsoft product. MAYBE something on this link will help?

Hi Ray,
I assume you are running Vista, like I am.
I am fully updated and I have never had any failed update (not even one!!)

I am set to "notify but do not download or install".
I can not help thinking that your problem is not Vista related.
Sorry, I can not really help....As roddy 32 said, may be Donna will have some ideas...... :(

That's a generic code error, which means that there's a multitude of things that can be causing it, including antivirus, firewall, etc. Have you tried disabling the antivirus, firewall and any other security apps?

This happened to me , as well...........

I solved the issue by implementing a "hot restart".

When I researched my events log, the Windows Update was in "stopping" mode.

How weird is that?

@gr277 Your assumption was correct but then there was a clue in 'dog of a system' LOL
Ditto everything.

Tried all permutations ie. disabled Online Armor, avast!, Malwarebytes'

@ roddy32 Cheers mate for earlier suggestions but no luck.

@ House of Games "hot restart" not familiar with the term. Can you enlighten me further before I go off Googling again.

Thanks for all your replies. :D

I think he means restarting the machine and then trying again before installing it. Or you could just download the MSI directly...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en (That assumes its Windows Vista wtih either SP1 or SP2 but not 64 bit)

I have assumed its this tech bulletin:

Microsoft article

Tried that previously, I've been at this since Tuesday evening. Even tried installing in Safe Mode which Vista don't allow, didn't know that before. End of the day for me but thanks to all who posted suggestions, much appreciated.
At least when Windows 7 is released I can sever the connection to Vista once and for all. Is it October yet ? :kick:

No Donna, I've just let it be at the moment, not be long before Windows 7 is released.

Ray,

Please try this:

Temporary disable AV and Firewall (also other real-time protection). Reboot to make sure the protection tools' services is not running.

Proceed to reregister the dll files mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/843499
Note: This applies to other OS but the error is the same. Re-register the dll files that you will find as long as it is mentioned in the said KB.

Please tell me also the version of your Vista. Example: 6.0.6002.22xxx or 6.0.6002.18xxx

Hi Donna, I carried out your instructions and all went well until I came to register the 3rd .dll in the list...

Attached Image: cmd.JPG

I used Run | Winver and Belarc, the system information is Vista Home Premium 6.0 (Build 6002: Service Pack 2) - no extra #

I had trouble installing the latest updates last night but finally succeed after 4 attempts and approx. 1 hour, using a standalone installer for (KB970653) which leaves Security Update for Windows Vista (KB971657) still outstanding.

Yes there is no initpki.dll on my Vista also which is why I wrote to re-register only the ones you can find :)

You can check the exact version of installed Vista by opening System Information. Just type System Information in search/run box to open it. You will see Hardware Abstract Layer version. Mine says 6.0.6002.18005
Ray, I only need this info to "confirm" something related to the said security update that is failing to install on your machine.

Also, have you tried to restart the Windows Update and BITS services? I'd like to suggest this also:

Open services console
Look for Windows Update service. Click Stop to service. In "Recovery tab", select "No action" in "First Failure". Click OK.
Do the same for BITS service.

Reboot the system. Confirm that both services is not running (msconfig>services)
Now, manually start the said two services.
Confirm it's running then try again to update using Windows Update.

If the above will not help, please check the event logs for the recent entry (system and applications) that is related to the said update (if any).

First up - Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "6.0.6002.18005"
After I rebooted msconfig>services stated that BITS was still running so I went through the process again and got this message ....
