If you have problem updating Microsoft AntiSpyware definitions, try any of the following method:

Method I:
Locate the following files in MSAS directory:

gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd

Rename or delete the above files.

If the above method failed, try the next method.

Method II:

Manually download the definitions for Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1:

http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/g...inationData.gcd
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/g...ditScanData.gcd
http://download.spynet.com/ASDefinitions/g...tThreatData.gcd

Save these files in your MSAS directory overwriting the
older definitions.

If you still have issues, let us know or visit Microsoft Newsgroup and post your issues.

Hi Kostan

Great to know it worked for you. Some users managed to download/replace the files but the updater still installs 5729.

The above trick was shared by another user (nickname is "Taxman") over in public newsgroup for Microsoft AntiSpyware. I thought of adding it here just in case CoU member or visitors has the issue.

Thanks for letting us know it worked! Don't forget to run a full scan to see if the new defs finds any. Hope none.

- Donna

Right and quick response moving my reply.

I used Method II to fix the issue.

Thank you again and I hope you all have a nice Summer. B)

P.S. I always try to keep my PC clean from pests and safe :)

i found this from another place and it worked for me

After much debugging, I have found that the problem with definition update failures and repetition is because of an incorrect version of the file gcUnCompress.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ (for XP) or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\ (for 2000 or systems upgraded from 2000).

The incorrect version is of length 130,272 bytes.
The correct version is of length 95,448 bytes.

To update your system to install the correct version of the file, do the following:

1. In the System Notification Area, right-click on the MSAS icon and select "Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware".
2. In Explorer, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, locate the file "gcUnCompress.dll", right-click on it, and select "Delete".
3. In Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs", select "Microsoft AntiSpyware" and click button "Change".
4. Click "Next".
5. Select "Update Microsoft AntiSpyware", click "Next".
6. Click "Install".
7. When the re-installation finishes, click "Finish".
8. In Explorer, in folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\, check that
"gcUnCompress.dll" is now 95,448 bytes long, by right-clicking it and selecting "Properties".
9. Launch MSAS, pull down the File menu and select "Check for updates" - this time it really will update your definition files to the latest version.
10. In Explorer, open the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware, and satisfy yourself that the modification dates of the three definition files have changed:
gcDeterminationData.gcd
gcThreatAuditThreatData.gcd
gcThreatAuditScanData.gcd

Done!

You won't ever have to manually install the definition files again, nor will the update keep repeating every time you try.

I applied Robin Walker's (rdhw[MVP Networking] ) fix last Sunday when somebody posted this same thing at CNET after copying and quoting it off Robin's post at the MSAS Newsgroups section. It worked great for me and others UNTIL yesterday's updates. Some people, including me are getting the looping back again but not everybody. I rechecked the size of the .dll and it is still the correct size so this fix turned out to be temporary for SOME of us.

yliverkko,

Thanks for joining CoU and thanks for posting it. It was originally posted by MVP Robin Walker in the Microsoft Spyware Newsgroup. You can see this newsgroup by opening MSAS>Help>Support Newsgroup on the web.

BTW, the temporary fix worked to some users but not with other users. As we can see, Roddy himself tried it last week and now seeing the signature looping issue again.

MS is of course aware of the reported issues in updating and let's hope they'll fix this "singature loops".

For the meantime and for users who experienced the said looping issue, try the manual method #2 mentioned in this topic.

Regards,

Donna

Hi again,

Yes, that will surely help some members. That tip worked like a charm with some users while others found it as temporary fix only.

Again, thanks for posting it.
