It is odd to have to use WU/MU to update the definitions...I don't like that...especially since WU/MU was 'broken' on my computer last year. Is that the way this program will work going forward? (guesses, of course)

I guess the idea is for those that use the automatic updates for Windows can get them automatically. For those that don't use auto update, such as me can also get them manually, which I just did by opening the program and clicking the little down arrow to the right of the question mark on the top of the program, then click "about Windows defender". When that pops up click where it says "check for updates". You will get a balloon saying it is connecting and checking. The balloon will disappear and then come back when it is done and tell either that there are no updates OR that they have been downloaded and installed.

Doing it the way I said is almost exactly the same as the old version except instead of a satelite, you have a balloon. LOL

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It was merely a coincidence that I checked Windows updates and forund it there.

I was told about this "Check for updates" after this event.

Funny thing now is it seems to be installed but this little window you speak of is saying I need to install a so called Disk ....

Umm where would this be...LOL

Microsoft has updated the Known Issues:

  • If your computer runs Windows in a language other than English, you might see a message titled "error 1609" when you attempt to install Windows Defender (Beta 2). See this Microsoft Help and Support page for steps to resolve this issue.

  • If you attempt to install Windows Defender (Beta 2) on a computer that uses Windows 2000, you might see the following message: "This software requires GDI+. Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software Prerequisite Pack." See this Microsoft Help and Support page for steps to resolve this issue.

  • If you try to run a scan while Windows Defender (Beta 2) is downloading definition updates you may receive the following error "Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80508012. An unexpected problem is preventing the program from scanning your computer for unwanted software. Try to scan your computer again." Try to run a scan again after the definitions have been updated.

  • The system tray icon for Windows Defender (Beta 2) will not be visible if no action is needed. This is expected behavior.

  • If you uninstall Windows Defender (Beta 2) and then re-install it, Windows Defender (Beta 2) will not be able to receive new definitions until the next definition update is published on Windows Update. Please see this Microsoft Help and Support page for more information.
Also it's a good idea to stay updated on the newsgroups.

Release Notes

------------

Remus Dei, you should try asking on the newsgroups about that problem. :)

I thank everyone for the advice, and I have attempted to sign in o the spyware group, but failed each time. Because of this error I have now decided to uninstall till the issue has been cleaned p for no one seems to have the same results.

Weirdest part is this was a fairly new machine.

Oh well.

Till I see it as a public download I guess.

Thank you all.

Hi Guys,

If anyone is experiencing issues (general or Windows Defender specific) with Windows Update then you could try using "Dial-a-fix" to resolve the issues.

This can be downloaded from:

http://djlizard.net/...ware/dial-a-fix

Dial-a-fix is an advanced utility for Microsoft Windows written by DjLizard in Borland Delphi that repairs various Windows problems, such as:

Windows Update errors and problems with Automatic Updates
SSL, HTTPS, and Cryptography service (signing/verification) issues
COM/ActiveX object errors and missing registry entries

and more.

Dial-a-fix (hereby known as "DAF") is a collection of known fixes gleaned from Microsoft Knowledgebase articles, Microsoft [MVPs], and other important support forums, that will assist you in repairing problems with your system.

Although this tool is ordinarily meant for power users, technicians, and administrators, it is quite safe to use even without technical guidance (although it is recommended).

Simply choose the solutions you wish to apply via checkmarks, and click GO. There are other buttons and tools present on the main dialog as well, such as the policy scanner. All tools and checkmarks identify their purpose when you mouse over them.

DAF works on all pertinent 32-bit versions of Windows: 98, 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. Dial-a-fix dynamically disables functions that are not applicable to your version of Windows. The version of Windows with the most support and functionality is currently Windows XP.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Simon
